Second Nature, 2024

5 minutes, multi-channel video installation, plants, soil
Sound: Philippe Lambert

Second Nature is a multimedia installation that examines the increasingly ambiguous boundary between technological and natural phenomena. By positioning the single channel video amidst living vegetation and reflective surfaces, the work creates a liminal space where synthetic and organic elements coalesce into a new form of hybrid reality. The installation combines 3D animation, living plants, and mirrors, allowing the artificial environment to transcend the confines of the screen.

The digital landscape features bioluminescent forms and crystalline structures that speak to the unsettling allure of artificially constructed natural environments. Strategically placed mirrors alongsi physical foliage creates an infinite regression of reflection and representation, echoing the way which our understanding of the organic world has become increasingly mediated through digital interfaces. This multiplication of space embodies the recursive relationship between genuine and simulated experiences of wilderness in the Anthropocene.
